Action of pesticides to Metarhizium anisopliae in soil Neotropical Entomology
Mochi,Dinalva A.; Monteiro,Antonio C.; Barbosa,José C..
The present study aimed to analyze the action of some acaricides, fungicides, insecticides and herbicides containing different active ingredients on Metarhizium anisopliae Metsch. (Sorokin) inoculated into autoclaved soil. The action of the pesticides was evaluated based on the fungal respiratory activity. The first assessment was done at 48h after inoculation. The pesticides were then added and respiratory activity was determined nine times every 48h and an additional five times every 4 days. Except for the fungicides, no significant effect (P > 0.05) of the pesticides on M. anisopliae was observed. A reduction in CO2 production was observed for the mancozeb treatment from day 4 to day 6 of incubation, and for tebuconazol between days 4 and 6, 8 and...

We provide a systematic review of the adaptive comanagement (ACM) literature to (i) investigate how the concept of governance is considered and (ii) examine what insights ACM offers with reference to six key concerns in environmental governance literature: accountability and legitimacy; actors and roles; fit, interplay, and scale; adaptiveness, flexibility, and learning; evaluation and monitoring; and, knowledge. Findings from the systematic review uncover a complicated relationship with evidence of conceptual closeness as well as relational ambiguities. The findings also reveal several specific contributions from the ACM literature to each of the six key environmental governance concerns, including applied strategies for sharing power and responsibility...

Association of Mechanical and Chemical Methods for Cotton Stalk Destruction Planta Daninha
FRANCISCHINI,A.C.; CONSTANTIN,J.; MATTE,W.D.; OLIVEIRA JR.,R.S.; RIOS,F.A.; MACHADO,F.G..
ABSTRACT: The destruction of cotton stalks after harvesting is a prophylactic measure aimed at reducing the population of insects and disease inoculants that may remain in the crop residues and remaining cotton plants. The objective of this work was to evaluate integrated methods of management of the cotton stalks, combining mechanical and chemical control, to promote the eradication of cotton stalks. A 7x5 factorial experiment was installed where seven different methods of mechanical control of cotton stalk and five herbicide treatments were tested. The percentage of control (visual scale of 0 to 100%) and the number of plants regrowth per meter were evaluated at 14, 28 and 50 days after herbicide application treatment. At the end of the experiment, the...

COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF TRADITIONAL SOLAR SALTWORKS AND OTHER ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES IN A PORTUGUESE PROTECTED ESTUARY Boletín de Investigaciones
Sainz-López,Noa.
ABSTRACT This study shows that Traditional Solar Saltworks can be competitive with other land uses in the Nature Reserve of Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo Antonio Saltmarshes ("Reserva Natural do Sapal de Castro Marim e Vila Real de Santo Antonio", in Portuguese), sited in the estuary of the Guadiana River (SW Iberian Peninsula, Europe); particularly, if they are specialized in extraction of Fleur de Sel (or Flower of Salt), a gourmet variety of sea salt. Artisanal sea salt production based on solar evaporation methods of millennial history in the area is an environmentally sustainable activity in harmony with saltmarsh landscape. Two crystallizers of a 1 ha Traditional Solar Saltworks were monitored during 70 days from June to August 2015 with the...

Controlling Phalaris Minor in the Indian Rice-Wheat Belt AgEcon
Vincent, David P.; Quirke, Derek.
The ACIAR-managed project CS1/1996/013, Herbicide-resistant weeds of wheat in India and Australia: integrated management, was designed to find a long-term method of control of Phalaris minor, a problem weed of the rice–wheat cropping system of north-western India. By 1993, the weed had developed resistance to isoproturon, a herbicide which had delivered effective weed control for 15 years. The short-term solution, implemented before the ACIAR project commenced, involved identification and registration of a new set of herbicides. But these new herbicides were expensive. To ensure high adoption they needed to be combined with changes in wheat-growing techniques that would provide cost savings to help farmers pay for them. And to avoid the re-emergence of...

Development of process indicators for coastal zone management assessment in France ArchiMer
Henocque, Yves.
In order to assess local experiences of coastal management in France and their use of existing planning instruments, five case studies (Iroise Sea, Bay of Brest, Charentais Sounds, Morbihan Gulf, Bay of Arcachon) were selected along the French Atlantic coast for their geographic representativity, the issues at stake, and the coastal planning instruments under use. After a short description of their main characteristics, it is shown how a common grid of analysis has been settled and applied to the five case studies, with a focus on the definition and valuation of meaningful integrated coastal management (ICM) process indicators. The results lead to a clear identification of the strengths and weaknesses of available planning tools and their necessary...

Historical development of Cuban fisheries: why we need an integrated approach to fisheries management? OceanDocs
Baisre, J. A..

Robbing Peter to pay Paul: replacing unintended cross-taxa conflicts with intentional tradeoffs by moving from piecemeal to integrated fisheries bycatch management ArchiMer
Gilman, Eric; Chaloupka, Milani; Dagorn, Laurent; Hall, Martin; Hobday, Alistair; Musyl, Michael; Pitcher, Tony; Poisson, Francois; Restrepo, Victor; Suuronen, Petri.
Bycatch in fisheries can have profound effects on the abundance of species with relatively low resilience to increased mortality, can alter the evolutionary characteristics and concomitant fitness of affected populations through heritable trait-based selective removals, and can alter ecosystem functions, structure and services through food web trophic links. We challenge current piecemeal bycatch management paradigms, which reduce the mortality of one taxon of conservation concern at the unintended expense of others. Bycatch mitigation measures may also reduce intraspecific genetic diversity. We drew examples of broadly prescribed ‘best practice’ methods to mitigate bycatch that result in unintended cross-taxa conflicts from pelagic longline, tuna purse...

Sensitivity of wild-type and mutant Trichoderma harzianum strains tofungicides Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Herrera,Rodrigo; Núñez,David; Romero,Natalia; Besoain,Ximena; Pérez,Luz María; Montealegre,Jaime.
The germination of conidia in wild-type (Th11, Th12 and Th650) and mutant (Th11A80.1, Th12A10.1 and Th650-NG7) strains of Trichoderma harzianum that were exposed to different commercial fungicides was studied. All wild-type and mutant Trichoderma strains were germinated in the presence of 1,700 mg L-1 of pencycuron. The wild-type strains Th12 and Th650 and the corresponding mutant strains Th12A10.1 and Th650-NG7 were sensitive to all concentrations of iprodione and metalaxil + mancozeb. The EC50 (Median Effective Concentration) values for the different fungicides were between 10-1 and 10-4 less than the concentrations recommended for field applications; one exception was Phyto-fos on Th650-NG7, where this ratio was 0.72. These results establish whether...

The french approach to managing water resources in the mediterranean and the new European Water Framework Directive ArchiMer
Henocque, Yves; Andral, Bruno.
The main content of the new European Water Framework Directive is presented. Within its river basin management approach, a special mention of coastal waters status is made. Among the issues at stake are the setting up of river basin management plans, including coastal waters, and water quality assessment system leading to an harmonized definition of quality objectives and their appropriate indicators. The Rhone-Mediterranean-Corsica Water Master Plan, launched in 1996, is considered to be well fitted to this river basin approach and the necessary tools which go with it. It shows up how a river quality assessment system (SEQ) can be adapted to the coastal waters and how it can progressively lead to an efficient set of publishable environmental and...

The 'new' European fish culture systems: Recirculating systems, offshore cages, integrated systems ArchiMer
Blancheton, Jean-paul; Bosc, Pierre; Hussenot, Jerome; Roque D'Orbcastel, Emmanuelle; Romain, David.
Over the last few decades, European fish culture was developed mainly as a intensive monospecific activity. In most countries, marine aquaculture cannot continue to develop on the shore line where it first settled due to high competition with other activities. It has now to move either offshore or into recirculation systems located in less occupied spaces. Fresh water availability and impact of fish production farms on the environment are strongly restraining the development of the activity, which is even declining in some countries such as France. Recirculation systems make it possible to decrease water consumption and facilitate waste treatment. Their economical feasibility is being demonstrated and they offer an alternative to developing fish farms....
